About this course

Students who already have a grade D or E at GCSE Maths from school should take the GCSE Use of Maths course. Students who have an F or below at GCSE Maths from school will take Functional Skills Maths at Level 1 in the first year. If they pass this, they may carry on to GCSE Use of Maths the following year.

The emphasis of the GCSE Use of Maths is on applying Maths to real life situations and interpreting your results in the context of the task.

What does the course consist of?
The emphasis of the GCSE Use of Maths is on applying Maths to real life situations and interpreting your results in the context of the task. The course consists of three modules:
  • Functional Skills Maths (Level 2):?
    This concentrates on numerical competency (including percentages, fractions, ratios, shape and space) and on applying essential Maths skills to real life contexts.
  • FSMQ Data Handling:?
    This module comprises important statistical methods including averages, pie charts, cumulative frequency, box plots, stem and leaf diagrams, scatter diagrams.
  • FSMQ Financial Calculations:
    ?This module looks at the Maths needed for personal finance including wages, tax, National Insurance, interest rates, loans, mortgages.

Assessment
There is no coursework.
?All the exams have pre-release data sheets which we receive three weeks before the exam so that students are well prepared in answering questions on the real life contexts in the exam.?There are three exams:
?Functional Skills (Level 2) in January
?Data Handling in May
Financial Calculations in May.
