Composition is one of the most important elements of the visual language of painting, photography or any 2D art-form. This course will explore the various ways of using composition to enhance your subject matter, such as proportion, shape, rhythm, depth and the other elements that influence the way that we perceive a work of art.

Understand and identify the elements that make up a composition
Use these compositional elements to your advantage
Improve your skills in using all elements of visual language in your work.

All basic paints and brushes required for the course are provided.

There will be practical projects, individual guidance and encouragement, group discussion and examination of artists' work.

Course programme

Elements of composition such as
• Line — the visual path that enables the eye to move within the piece
Space — the space taken up by (positive) or in between (negative) objects
• Shape — areas defined by edges within the piece, whether geometric or organic
• Colour — hues with their various values and intensities
• Texture — surface qualities which translate into tactile illusions.

Additional information
