What Will I Learn

Full Time

The aim of the HND Golf Management (Golf Course) course is to develop the key management skills and knowledge to enable students to find employment in managerial positions within the sports turf sector.

The course combines classroom based activities, with visits to a range of golf courses, sports turf events and input from visiting industry professionals. The course finishes in June to allow students to progress into employment at the start of the key recruitment period within the sector.

Distance Learning

Course modules include: Integrated Management of Golf Course Environment, Golf Course Irrigation Systems, Project Management, Human Resources Management: An Introduction, History and Development of Golf (or IT in Business Spreadsheets), Developing Skills for Personal Effectiveness, Marketing: An Introduction, Plant Protection, Golf Course Management: Graded Unit 2, Integrated Pest Management for Sportsturf, Managing Structures and Non-turf Areas on the Golf Course, Contemporary Golf Industry, Understanding Golf Tourism, Soil Science for Turf Managers 2, Managing Turf Playing Performance, Landscape Industry: Specification and Estimation.

How Will I Learn

The course is delivered over 34 weeks. Classroom based theory activities are combined with golf course visits, work experience at tournaments including the Dunhill links Championship. There is also a day per week at Elmwood Campus Golf Course for students who wish to improve their practical skills on a wide range of modern equipment.

Distance Learning

This course is delivered through the provision of online distance learning materials. No attendance is required at college. The HND is delivered over 6 years. Because of this, it is more typical for students to initially register for the HNC (the first 3 years of the course), and once that is successfully completed, apply for advanced entry onto the HND (to complete the final 3 years). Those holding a HNC who wish to top up to HND must apply within 5 years of completing their HNC qualification.

Progression Opportunities

On successful completion of the course, students articulate on to recognised Degree programmes including BA Golf Tourism at The University of Abertay, Dundee. The award can also lead to management opportunities on golf courses both at home and abroad.
