Unit One: People and Politics
Unit Two: Governing the UK
Unit one explores the nature of our democracy, how we choose who governs us, and how the system works. Unit two focuses on parliament, government and the judiciary within the context of the UK Constitution - their effectiveness and their relationship with one another. We will examine the beliefs and values that underpin the UK constitution and inform various political ideologies, especially liberalism, conservatism and socialism. We will also consider the role of pressure groups and pluralism in political decision making. Should we change our electoral system? Have we given up too much power to the EU? Should the Prime Minister be less powerful? Does parliament do a good job? What, if anything, is the future of the House of Lords? These are some of the questions students will ask, and perhaps even answer! There is emphasis in this course on debate and argument; students need to be able to appreciate and explain issues from widely different points of view. A knowledge of current political topics and debates is essential.
