This course is for confident users of English who want to review, consolidate and extend their grammar to
speak and write more accurately. The grammar will be set in different contexts which will require you to use complex forms including different verb tenses. The emphasis will be on the use of grammar as well as understanding how grammar affects meaning.

About this course

• use narrative verb forms accurately and distinguish present perfect, past perfect and future perfect uses
• articulate the different meanings and use of perfect forms
• identify the different uses and meaning of simple and continuous forms
• use simple and continuous forms to talks about main and background information
• identify the different meanings and use of simple and continuous forms
• use past modals accurately and fluently
• use reported speech accurately
• identify when and how to use the passive vs active form
• use the passive form accurately
• identify the meaning and use of different if-clauses
• use if-clauses accurately and fluently.

There are no additional costs but you should bring a pen, paper and folder to class.

This will be a dynamic and creative course with a lot of interaction and opportunities to practise. The grammar will always be in the context of interesting and engaging topics.

Course programme

A variety of different grammatical structures will be covered depending on the needs of the group. The main areas likely to be included are:
• the perfect verb forms
• continuous vs simple verb forms
• when and how to use the passive
• modals including past modals – could have, should have, will have
• reported speech
• when and how to use the passive
• if-clauses and their meanings
• use past modals accurately and fluently
• use reported speech accurately
• identify when and how to use the passive vs active form
• use the passive form accurately
• identify the meaning and use of different if-clauses
• use if-clauses accurately and fluently.

Additional information

There are many courses you could do next or at the same time. You could do a level 1 or level 2 general ESOL course. The Cambridge English:Advanced course might be good for you. Suitable courses without an exam include: s of Opinion,, ESOL and Film, ESOL and Stories, ESOL Reading: Book Club, ESOL and Making Podcasts, Read Well, Write Well, Writing Skills in Practice, Advanced Writing Skills in Practice, Academic Writing in Practice, ESOL and Singing. Our business English courses would be helpful – English for Business and our Communicating at Work series. If you make good progress, Grammar in Practice: Advanced might also be suitable.
