Winchester Cathedral has a fascinating architectural history, ranging from the Anglo-Saxon period to the late Middle Ages. The transepts are a prime example of late 11th century Romanesque architecture, to which the late Perpendicular nave forms a striking contrast. Come and explore the basics of English medieval church architecture and familiarise yourself with different period styles.Winchester Cathedral also contains a vast array of medieval church furnishings, including a twelfth-century font, and rare survivals of medieval wall paintings. One of its glories is the Winchester Bible, one of the largest and most sumptuously illuminated twelfth-century manuscripts, which is on display in the cathedral. Please note: Your transport costs are not included.MEETING OPTIONS: The tutor will meet students travelling from London at 11:05 at Winchester Railway Station (off the 10:05 London train). The group will then walk to the west entrance of the cathedral of the cathedral where students may prefer to arrive independently at 11:30 for the course start-time.
