Course programme

The focus of the first term is to prepare you for the Personal Creative Enquiry. You will develop the ability to respond creatively to a variety of stimuli. You will research extensively, gathering a range of material which will include sourcing visual reference, drawings, photographs and notes to provide a comprehensive range of inspiration for your design work.

Throughout this time, you will be introduced to an exciting array of materials, techniques and processes including Illustration, typography, editorial, advertising and branding, package design, design for print, computer graphics, multimedia design, animation, storyboarding and layout, web and app design and game design techniques. You will complete a series of short projects to enable you to practise your new skills further and develop individual approaches.

The Personal Creative Enquiry provides the opportunity to explore and develop your Graphic Communication skills. Inspired by a design brief of your choice you will work on your selected project for about one and a half terms and start to develop greater independence in your work. During this time you will develop contextual understanding in relation to Graphic communication; experiment with a wide range of analogue and digital graphic processes; record a range of visual research and present individual responses. Your aim will be to design and create individual, high quality finished work within the contexts of commercial Graphic Communication creative briefs.

Throughout the year you will investigate the work of other artists and designers to develop and inform your own work. You will be able to take part in visits to galleries and exhibitions in order to gain a greater understanding of historical developments, cultural traditions, contemporary practice and the impact of new technologies within Graphic Communication. Recent visits have included top London galleries and Museums as well as more local events.  Opportunities to travel to Paris, Berlin and the Venice Biennale have also been offered to students in recent years.
