The Course
This National Diploma is designed to provide a broad based experience in Graphic Design and Illustration in the context of a diagnostic programme.

Course Content
In year one, there is a broad based introduction to graphic design and illustration, together with transferable skill acquisition. You will have the opportunity to work with a wide range of materials, working methods and processes exploring the specialist areas of:

  • Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign
During the second year, students begin to focus on areas of particular interest and are encouraged to work with increasing independence of mind.
We help and encourage our students to become as informed and self-supportive as possible in the exploration of their individual creative development. The department is large enough to support the investigation of a broad range of specialist options in our comprehensive and well equipped studios and small enough to help you realise your ambitions at a personal level.
The programme is delivered through practical studio based activity, together with research into contemporary and historical design practice. This National Diploma in Graphic Design and Illustration will help you to fulfil your creative potential in a friendly and supportive environment.

1st Year
This is an introduction to many of the areas of Graphic Design and Illustration. You will be guided and taught through a combination of teaching, tutorials and workshops so that you are able to research relevant information, develop ideas fully, learn new skills, express yourself visually and verbally and work through and solve design problems successfully.

2nd Year
Students will develop more advanced Graphic Design and Illustration skills and work which will become the major portion of the portfolio that will be shown at interview to gain a place at college or university or to secure employment. There is also full access to well equipped studios, Flexible Learning Areas and excellent IT facilities complete with industry-standard software.

Progression/Career Path
Students are able to progress on to a range of Higher Education programmes - principally BTEC Higher National Diploma, Foundation Degree and BA Hons Degree courses in Graphic Design, Illustration and related disciplines or employment.
