Course programme

Reportage illustration is the art of recording real events and situations by hand on paper, just as a photo journalist would use a camera to record them for a magazine or newspaper feature. New directions and innovative developments will be looked at, from the social conscience of Robert Weaver and Sue Coe to the personal journeys of Oliver Kugler and others who documented and recorded the everyday, making distinctive visual statements.

In this course you will explore and develop your drawing and observational skills on location and in the studio, experiencing a flavour of the BA Graphic Design course at Central Saint Martins.

Topics covered

  • Reportage drawing projects will include visits to markets and museums, cafes and parks, all within walking distance of college.
  • We will look at newsworthy events and how to create immediacy and make social awareness a feature of your work.
  • We will observe people, places and objects, gathering visual research and building your picture making skills through drawing.
  • You will explore new materials and techniques and at the end of the course professional practice and portfolio advice will be given.

Feedback will be given throughout the course with personal tutorials and informal group critiques.
