Course programme

By attending guitar beginners, you will: - use music sheets to play in a variety of different genres (e.g. pop, rock and blues) - develop ensemble skills with other musicians. - develop general musicianship, a good basic understanding of the guitar and how some music theory relates to it. - gain the confidence to play music to friends and family members as a solo player, and with other musicians. - develop the skills, knowledge and technique required to progress to more advanced music on the Guitar Improvers course. Stage 1 (Autumn term): Tuning the guitar Use of appropriate body posture for your type of guitar Correct use of the hands and fingers in order to play safely and more effectively Reading chord boxes, guitar tablature and rhythm slashes Learning first open major, minor and dominant chord shapes Playing the guitar using a variety of strum patterns and chord progressions Stage 2 (Spring term): Learning more advanced open chord shapes and types (including suspended chords) Learning to play and use power chords Playing the guitar using more advanced strumming techniques (including chord arpeggios) Using basic music theory to enhance own playing Stage 3 (Summer term): Playing the guitar using fingerstyle technique Using basic music theory to play more advanced open chord shapes and types (including slash chords) Learning to play and use barre chordsStudents will be taught: through verbal communication, whiteboard, practical demonstrations, music listening, music sheets and text resources issued by the tutor; by playing music on the guitar individually and in duos and through feedback from members of the group. By designating approximately 20 minutes per day as your own practice time -you will learn much more quickly than those who try to cram in a lot of practice just before a lesson.
