About this course

Returning students must have an NVQ Level 1 qualification in their chosen course. Students must be able to work effectively with others and be willing to carry out and receive all treatments. You will also be required to carry out treatments on male clients. All students must display a positive attitude, be prepared to work as part of a team and have excellent attendance.

Who The Course is for
This is ideal for students who have completed Level 1 Hairdressing. Its also suitable for more mature students looking for a new career.
Succesful students will:
- be good at working with their hands
- be creative and artistic
- have good communication skills
- be able to work quickly and neatly
- enjoy working with people
- be interested in fashion and grooming.

Course Content
Much of the coursework is practical, working in the college salons training to become competent in male/female hairdressing. Theory is covered in order to assist and support the practical work. Flexible learning techniques are used to deliver theory, which include learning packages, group work, projects/assignments, demonstrations and videos.
All students will study the following:
- reception/retail
- consultation/diagnosis
- shampooing and conditioning
- health, safety & hygiene
- cutting hair
- style dress and finish hair
- colour
- key skills
- retail promotions.
Optional enrichment courses and trips may be available to full time students at an additional cost. Details will be available from the course coordinator.
All students must purchase relevant kit from the Hairdressing department prior to the start of the course. Costs will be discussed at enrolment and during the college induction. Students will be required to carry out treatments on the general public who book in as clients at our reception area. All students must display a positive attitude, be prepared to work as part of a team and have excellent attendance.
All Level 2 students must attend work placements in a salon during the year.
All students must wear the college uniform, which is:
- Long smart black trousers (purchased by student).
- College tunic (purchased from the department).
- Low heeled full black smart shoes (purchased by student).
- Students will be required to remove all visible jewellery including facial piercing during all practical sessions (due to awarding body requirements) and have short nails with no nail polish.
Mobile phones must not be accessed in classrooms and salons unless permission has been sought from the course coordinator.
If the above is not adhered to you will be asked to leave the salons.
A certain level of manual dexterity will be required for this course.
Entry RequirementsLearning & Assessment Methods
Assessment is by practical observation, oral questioning, case studies, written essential knowledge papers. End examinations set by the examination awarding body will take place later in the course. An internal/external verifier will assess all portfolio evidence and practical skills.

Progression Opportunities
This is a nationally recognised qualification. Students who successfully complete Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing may progress to the Level 3 Diploma qualification in Hairdressing or Barbering.
Career Opportunities
This course will enhance employment prospects and provides scope for employment in Hairdressing Salons, Hair/Beauty Consultancies or as a Sales Person.

If you are 16-18 years old you do not have to pay course tuition fees*.
