Level 2 Apprenticeship is ideal if you're just starting out in hair and beauty and want an understanding of the industry, enough to succeed in a job in the area or to move on to further study.

An apprenticeship gives you a head start in the career that you want, with many apprentices climbing the ladder to management roles. You’ll be trained in the skills that employers need, giving you a qualification that’s useful to your industry, and skills that last a lifetime.

You will study a variety of units relating to Hairdressing and these may include:

Health and safety;
Advise and consult with clients;
Shampoo and consultation for hair and scalp;
Promote products and services to clients in a salon;
Cut hair using basic techniques;
Change hair colour;
Style and finish hair;
Set and dress hair;
Give clients a positive impression of yourself and your organisation;
Functional skills Qualification in English to Level 1 and Maths to Level 1;
Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR Booklet);
Personal Learning and Thinking skills (PLTS).
As an apprentice you will receive relevant training which means that you can have an immediate effect on your employer's business by making a significant contribution and filling any skills gaps. Apprenticeships are designed to help young employees like you reach their full potential, and because they are structured and require commitment you’ll find yourself becoming more disciplined from the very start.

What I would highlight: Good workshop, nice tutor
What could be improved: Too many students and course was teaching 2 different levels and so 2 different groups at the same time. Very little time with tutor and as she was having to demenstrate different things to different groups in the class you were left waiting around for lots of time with little instruction.

Course programme

By the end of your apprenticeship you will have achieved:

  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing;
  • A qualification in Maths Level 1 or above (if required);
  • A qualification in English Level 1 or above (if required);
  • Employee Rights and Responsibilities;
  • Personal Learning & Thinking Skills.

This can lead to :

  • The Advanced Level Hairdressing or Barbering Apprenticeship;
  • Employment as a junior stylist or other job roles within hairdressing related industries.

Course Assessment Method

You will complete online computer based exams at the end of each unit including a range of methods such as; Direct observation of tasks or activities, examination of work products produced by learners (e.g. diary notes, site notes, completed reports), examination of witness testimonies from people, other than the assessor, who are prepared to provide statements detailing specific details of learners’ performance, review of records of ‘question and answer’ sessions covering specific aspects of the knowledge and understanding and Professional discussion. All of these assessment methods will build your portfolio of evidence.
