Hairdressing NVQ Level 1

About the course:
This Hairdressing course is a two year programme. While working towards the NVQ Level 1 qualification, you will be practising your skills.

Course Content:
You will learn skills which will include blow drying, setting, colouring including weaving, perming, and cutting, in prepration for NVQ Level 2.

Learning Style:
As a practical course underpinned by a theoretical background, the skills that you will learn will be taught through a variety of situations, in the commercial salon and in theory lessons.

Equipment Requirements:
You will be required to purchase a hairdressing kit for the practical assessments. The full hairdressing kit costs £136.99, or you can start by purchasing kit A at £70.99 and then kit B at £66.00. You will be required to wear a uniform, this consists of a black zip front tunic (cost approx. £19.95), black trousers (cost 14.95) and black shoes with a small heel. You will be required to find models for your practical assessments, who will be expected to contribute to the cost of consumables. There will also be additional costs for text books including NVQ level 2 Hairdressing with Barbering by Leah Palmer & Nicci Moorman Heinemann ISBN 0-435-45155-3, Illustrated Hairdressing Dictionary by Jane Hiscock, Leah Palmer & Nicci Moorman Heinemann ISBN 978-0-435464-89-9, and hairdressing trips.

Assessment:
Within the course structure, there are four areas of assessment, practical observation, oral questioning, assignments / case studies, and written test papers. You will need to pass all four areas of assessment. Completion of all assessments will be retained in a portfolio. This portfolio will be internally and externally verified.

Progression:
Students may progress to the NVQ level 2 in Hairdressing after completing level 1. This will include a skills assessment in June which consists of bringing in a model for a set or blow dry, and to show your skills in weaving and perm winding on a block. We will also look at attendance on the level 1 course.

Additional Information:
If you are on a qualifying means tested benefit, the tuition fees for some courses may be reduced. However, you will still need to pay Exam and College costs. You must claim tuition fee remission by providing evidence before enrolment.

Requirement
For entry onto this course, students with English as a second language are required to have ESOL at entry level 3, as the course contains a high level of written evidence with assignments, written questions and test papers. It is also dependent upon your motivation, desire and commitment. It should be noted that a good standard of physical health is required as hairdressing is often physically demanding and is not suitable for some skin conditions. It would be an advantage to have a salon work experience placement within a hairdressing salon while you attend this course.
