About this course

Students must have a Level 2 qualification in Hairdressing or equivalent. Students enrolling on this programme will spend 3 days a week in college plus a minimum of 10 hours in industry. It is advisable for students to arrange their industrial placement prior to starting the course.

Introduction:
This NVQ not only provides essential skills for employment in the hairdressing industry, but also offers students the opportunity to enter national competitions, and gain additional specialist certificates. In the past, students have also had the opportunity visit trade shows and specialist exhibitions.

Study Mode & Location:
This course will be one year (14 hrs per week). It will be held at Preston College, Fulwood Campus, St Vincent`s Road, Preston, PR2 8UR.

Course Content:
This course comprises nine units selected from the following:

  • Ensure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety (G1).
  • Promote additional products or services (G4).
  • Provide hairdressing consultation services (G9).
  • Create a variety of looks using a combination of cutting techniques (G27).
  • Provide colour correction services (H28).
  • Style and dress long hair (H26).
  • Perm using a variety of techniques (H29).
  • Colour hair using a variety of techniques (H30).
  • Contribute to the planning and implementation of promotional activities (H32).
  • Add hair extensions to create a variety of looks - block and clamp required (H22).


Students enrolling on this programme must work on a minimum of 3 days per week in the hairdressing salon.

Assessment:
Assessment will be carried out during the course by an assessor observing and questioning your practical work. As the assessment becomes more familiar, you will be able to take control in the planning of your own assessments together with the development of your portfolio (which will contain evidence of your work). The assessor will watch you working and assess your performance against national standards. You will be asked to undertake activities in a work-related environment (eg the College`s own hairdressing salon) and will be asked to provide clients for assessment purposes. All units also have mandatory written papers.

Careers & Progression Opportunities:
Successful completion of this course together with a successful interview, will allow you to progress to Diplomas in specialist qualifications. You may also seek employment in hairdressing salons as a stylist/senior stylist/manager.

There will be a cost involved for this course (which will be substantially reduced if you are on income-based benefits). You will also need the following equipment/materials. (Please note - costs are approximate and will be confirmed at induction).

How To Apply
You will need to have an informal interview with an Adult Admissions Adviser.
Many courses have limited places so please enquire as soon as possible. Following interview, the earliest you may enrol is mid-June.
