Who The Course is for
For students who wish to continue to develop their professional hair skills.
Places will be given on production of a satisfactory reference or previous study history.
Succesful students will:
- be good at working with their hands

- be able to work quickly and neatly
- enjoy working with people
- be interested in fashion and grooming.

Course Content
The course offers students the opportunity to improve & develop further skills in:
- health and safety
- promotion
- consultation
- style and dress hair
- colour correction
- colouring of hair
- creative cutting
- style and dress long hair
- wider key skills.
- work placement
All students must purchase an additonal kit from the Hairdressing department prior to the start of the course. Costs will be discussed at enrolment and during the college induction. Students will be required to carry out treatments on the general public who book in as clients at our reception area. On occasion you will also need to provide a paying model for your practical assessments.
Optional enrichment courses and trips may be available to full time students at an additional cost. Details will be available from the course coordinator.
All students must wear the college uniform, which is:
- Long smart black trousers (Purchased by student)
- College tunic (Purchased from the department)
- Low heeled full black smart shoes (Purchased by student)
- Students will be required to remove all visible jewellery including facial piercing during all practical sessions (due to awarding body requirements) and have short nails with no nail polish.
Mobile phones must not be accessed in classrooms and salons unless permission has been sought from the course coordinator.
If the above is not adhered to you will be asked to leave the salons.
A certain level of manual dexterity will be required for this course.

Entry RequirementsLearning & Assessment Methods
Assessment is by practical observation, oral questioning, case studies, written essential knowledge papers set at week 10 and 20. End examinations set by the examination awarding body will take place on week 30. An internal/external verifier will assess all portfolio evidence and practical skills.
Qualifications Gained
NVQ Level 3 in Hairdressing awarded by City & Guilds.
Progression Opportunities
This is a nationally recognised qualification. Students who successfully complete the Level 3 Diploma in Hairdressing may progress to the Level 4 Higher Professional Certificate/Diploma in Technical Salon Management.
If you successfully complete a level 3 course at Skelmersdale & Ormskirk College we will offer you a place on an appropriate Foundation Degree at Newcastle College (subject to satisfactory interview or course audition).

Career Opportunities
This course will enhance employment prospects and provides scope for employment in Hairdressing Salons, Hair/Beauty Consultancies at senior level or as a Sales Person.

If you are 16-18 years old you do not have to pay course tuition fees*.
