About this course

Students are expected to possess basic literacy skills, a caring nature and a desire to work within the care environment. However, no experience or employment in a care setting is necessary. Students will also undergo a CRB check as a matter of course.

Introduction:
This course provides an excellent opportunity to gain the skills and knowledge required to become a competent care worker. It is a very practical based course, aimed at providing the opportunity to learn new skills, become more confident and develop practice. The NVQ in Health & Social Care is a nationally recogised qualification required by employers for anyone wanting to work in a care environment.

Study Mode & Location:
This 24 week part-time course will be held at Preston College, Fulwood Campus, St Vincent`s Road, Preston, PR2 8UR.

This course is also available to be studied at an employers workplace. Contact the advice centre for further details.

Course Content:
The course includes:

  • Legal and organisational requirements for care work.
  • Building relationships and communication strategies.
  • Understanding rights, choices, equality, diversity, confidentiality and protection of vulnerable adults.
  • Developing knowledge, skills and practice.
  • General nursing care: including meeting personal hygiene needs, toileting and moving & handling.
  • Principles of First Aid and Health & Safety.


Assessment:
There is no examination. Evidence of competent performance and development of knowledge and skills is assessed by the production of a portfolio. Guidance, support and observation of performance will be provided to achieve this portfolio. Other evidence generated may include assignments, case studies, projects, written observation questions, witness testimonies and self-reflected accounts.

Careers & Progression Opportunities:
Successful completion of this course will enable progression to NVQ Level 3 Health & Social Care, which is an avenue into nurse training and higher management training or to employment within the care industry.

How To Apply
You will need to have an informal interview with a Adult Admissions Adviser.
Many courses have limited places so please enquire as soon as possible. Following interview, the earliest you may enrol is mid-June.
