4 or more GCSEs at grade D or above plus a caring, enthusiastic and sympathetic manner with an aptitude for practical work and dedication to the care of others.
A Foundation Award in Caring for Children (distinction grade) may also be considered.

Aim A 1 year, practical work-related course introducing you to the employment area you have chosen and providing you with a good basis to go on to more advanced work related qualifications.
Content You will study 6 units; 2 core units and 4 specialist units.
The 2 core units are:
· Communication and individual rights
· Individual needs.
The specialist units are:
· Vocational experience
· Human lifespan development
· Therapeutic play and creative activities
· Impact of diet on health.
Work placements will enable you to develop your professional skills. You will undertake 60 hours of work experience during the college year.
Units are internally assessed through assignments that are set and marked by your tutors.
Progression/career opportunities
Successful students seeking employment can find a wide range of careers within the care sector. Alternatively you may choose to use your qualification as a progression route to higher level courses.
Extra information All students will be required to successfully complete a CRB disclosure form. In order to attend work placements a clear CRB is required. The cost of this will be met by the student and is currently £37.
Screening
Students will also be screened (in the College) and must achieve literacy and numeracy at the level appropriate to the course.
