This course enables successful students to automatically progress to the Public Health and Community Studies BA (Hons) Degree course at Coventry University Scarborough Campus.

This may be an ideal course if you want a preparatory period of study before progressing on to a degree in social care or youth work.

This may be an ideal course if you want a preparatory period of study before progressing onto a degree in a range of health and care subjects. Essential academic skills are embedded into all the work to ensure you are able to excel in future learning. The foundation course is also useful if you have the academic ability to succeed at degree-level study but do not have the appropriate subject background knowledge.

On successful completion of the programme you should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

• Academic & underpinning skills for health & social care – you will gain a clear understanding of the requirements of study with a range of skills that will enable you to navigate your future programme of study in health and social care with the greatest chance of success;
• Working in the health and social care sector - this module examines the provision of services in the health and social care sector and the roles and responsibilities alongside the necessary skills of people working in this sector. Key influences on service delivery and care planning are analysed including legislation, partnerships and values that affect the provision of these services and how this impacts on service delivery;
• Health care perspectives - this module examines a variety of approaches and perspectives in health care delivery. Models and concepts of wellness, health and illness are analysed. Health and disease are examined through an in-depth examination of anatomy and physiology of major body systems and the holistic influences on them in contemporary UK society;
• Social care perspectives - this module examines the provision of social care and how it is changing to meet the needs of people within the economic constraints and demographic changes in contemporary society. The study of sociological theories will enable you to develop a critical awareness of the influence of society and social factors on the life chances of individuals and groups in society.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

This course will be taught through a variety of methods – lectures, tutorials, self-directed learning, textbooks, module webs, scenario-based learning sets, professional libraries and resources, journals and case studies, seminars, discussion forums and peer-to-peer learning.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

At Coventry University Scarborough Campus there are no traditional final examinations to worry about. Instead, we’ll assess your learning through course work and phase tests. Assessments take place at the end of each six-week block. Tutors can provide support through regular updates and tutorials, either online or face to face.

TEACHING CONTACT HOURS

As a full-time student a normal learning block will mean that you get 18 hours of teaching each week in groups of approximately 25-50 students. Depending on the course you have chosen, you will attend morning (9.00-13.00) or afternoon (14.00-18.00) sessions. You will also need to attend one two-hour tutorial each week.
