HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE Intermediate/GCSE
Course outline
You will take 6 units in total.
All students take two core units:
Communication and Individual Rights this is about developing communication skills and awareness of clients in Health and Social care settings.
Individual needs this unit allows you to explore what clients need to make them comfortable and happy.
You will also take four specialist units:
Vocational experience for this unit you will complete a work experience placement in a real Health or Social Care organisation. You will report on skills used and experiences.
The other 3 specialist units allow you to study particular areas in more depth, they will be selected from: Cultural diversity, Anatomy & Physiology, Human lifespan development, Creative & Therapeutic Activities, Health & Social care services, The impact of diet.
Teaching styles
You will complete portfolio assignments for each unit, that are based on realistic workplace situations and activities. Therefore the teaching styles will reflect the diversity required to complete these assignments. There will be group discussions, case study work, presentations, individual research, role play situations, practical application. There will be a lot of emphasis on students making contact with, and finding out information from real Health & Social care workers and organisations to ensure that you get the best understanding of what it is like to work in this area.
Assessment
All units are assessed by portfolio assignments which are graded to give an overall grade for the qualification.
Subject combinations
Ant other Social Science subjects such as Humanities and Psychology will go well with many of the issues raised in this course, as would Law. Also Science subjects will complement Health & Social care for those wishing to progress into more health/medical related fields.
Resources and facilities
Local Health & Social Care organisations and professionals will be important resources, as will the College Learning Resource Centre. Also to keep up to date with developments, computers will play an important role to help complete essential research.
Key features
This course provides a very good basis on which to enter employment in Health & Social Care related careers, and also allows progression onto further study in Health & Social care and related subjects. The assessment style means that you will be able to focus on areas of Health & Social Care that really interest you, teachers will be there to introduce you to important concepts, and to facilitate your own personal development.
Entry requirements
As part of a level 2 programme a minimum of 5 grade Ds at GCSE, or equivalent, including English Language.
