Course programme

This qualification is about the delivery of physical, emotional or enabling care to clients/service users. The candidate will usually be delivering care in support of, and under the direction of, a colleague who is accountable in the area of practice. Candidates may often be working without direct supervision or on their own, such as in a client’s/service users own home. Candidates will have a degree of responsibility and autonomy, and will be required to make decisions within boundaries and limits agreed with their team.

Structure and Content
To achieve this qualification, candidates must achieve 8 units made up of 4 mandatory units and 4 optional units.

The mandatory units are:

  • Promote effective communication for and about individuals
  • Promote, monitor and maintain health, safety and security in the working environment
  • Reflect on and develop your practice
  • Promote choice, well-being and the protection of all individuals

The optional units are selected from a large range and could include:

  • Support individuals to access and use services and facilities
  • Contribute to the prevention and management of abusive and aggressive behaviour
  • Enable individuals to access housing and accommodation
  • Support individuals with specific communication needs
  • Support individuals through detoxification programmes

…and many other options

Candidates can also undertake additional units, although these are not required to complete the qualification.

How is it delivered and assessed?
There will be continuous assessment, carried out for the most part in the workplace. This qualification is competence based, which means that it is linked to a person’s ability to competently perform a range of tasks connected with their work.
