Why study FdSc Health and Social Care Practice?
If you are already working in health and social care, this two-year Foundation course will improve your understanding of client or patient conditions and learn how best to improve their care. It will also equip you with the knowledge and skills to continue study on a professional specialised programme.

Drawing on the expertise of UWE Bristol staff in Allied Health Professions and Nursing and Midwifery, the course is delivered at a choice of partner colleges across the West of England. College tutors bring a wealth of experience in professional practice as well as teaching. They also provide support and guidance throughout the course.
Real world experience
The course provides a balance of theory and practice. During term-time, one day a week is spent in college undertaking a range of modules. At the same time, you will be based in your own practice doing practice-based modules. There is a strong focus on work-based learning so you can apply new knowledge and skills in your job. You will also receive support from a work-based mentor throughout the course.
Where it can take you
On successful completion, you will be equipped to advance your career or study for a professional qualification. Past students have gone on to more advanced jobs with greater responsibility. Others have pursued professional qualifications at UWE Bristol.

Course programme

Content

The overall course aim is to prepare an Assistant Practitioner to work with a specified range of skills in partnership with others within national, regional and local employment arenas. The skills are based within the following categories:

  • Technical and work related skills
  • Key and generic skills
  • Increased understanding of the world of work
  • Employment involvement

The core key skills are identified as:

  • Communication
  • Teamwork
  • Problem solving
  • Application of number (through practice learning)
  • Use of information technology
  • Improving learning and performance
Learning and Teaching

Teaching methods range from lectures, seminars, practical learning and case studies.

Throughout the course, you will do practice-based modules in your own practice. Work-based learning is a strong emphasis and your work-based mentor will oversee and assess your progress throughout the course.

Study time

There are two modes of completing the course:

1. You will use your own workplace as the focus for your learning with equal time spent on theory and practice. You will have an identified work-based mentor provided by the service that will oversee the integration of theory and practice.

2. You will attend the college partner for the taught element of the course.

Assessment

Assessment methods are varied and include essays, presentations, project work and examinations.
