The degree is designed to be fully supportive to those who are new to university study, whatever your age. There are a variety of assessments and these may include coursework assignments, formal examinations, presentations and research projects. You can study a maximum of 90 credits per year and a minimum of 30. You can expect to commit to approximately 10 hours a week for each module you take, which includes contact time and independent study. Tutors are experts in their field and have extensive teaching experience. Throughout your degree programme you will be provided with considerable support and guidance.

Course programme

Level 4 (first year of undergraduate study)

On this degree, you are required to complete all of the following core modules:
  • Health, Welfare and Social Policy
  • Class and Capitalism in a Neoliberal World
  • Researching Society and Culture
  • History of Sociological Thought
In order to gain a BA (Hons) Degree you will be required to successfully complete a total of 360 credits. Each module you study is usually worth 30 credits (some departments also offer 15 credit modules). There are compulsory core modules which you must complete before proceeding to the next level of study.

Honours Level

At Honours level, you can choose a further 120 credits from the indicative list below (modules offered in 2016). The remaining will be chosen from a list of optional modules which you will be given guidance on before making your selection.
