The programme emphasises the development and enhancement of those practical skills necessary to provide high levels of care for personal and physical care needs and the support of recreational, developmental and therapeutic activities. Suitable for senior care workers, health care workers, home care organisers and community support workers who are seeking a formal qualification to enhance career prospects and assist them in their care role. The programme is also relevant to resident child care workers and foster carers as well as workers in health, youth justice and educational settings. Candidates are likely to have some supervisory responsibility or be involved in specialist tasks with a degree of responsibility and independence.

About this course

There are no formal entry requirements for the NVQ although candidates must be working with service users or carers. Good literacy and oral communication skills are necessary and the uke learning assessor must also be confident that the learner is able to generate the evidence necessary to achieve the qualification.

Programme Summary

Health and Social Care services for adults and children are highly regulated. This means you need to have the right qualification if you are working in a hospital, residential home or day care setting. The Health and Social Care NVQ is a nationally recognised and flexible qualification based on industry standards, available at 3 levels and aimed at those who deliver direct health and social care with a focus on the development and maintenance of independence, and hands-on care to support physical and emotional daily living needs.

Day to day work tasks will provide opportunities for recognition for candidates and in particular, the programme emphasises the development and enhancement of those practical skills necessary to provide high levels of care for personal and physical care needs and the support of recreational, developmental and therapeutic activities.

Programme Content

The programme is unit based and candidates must complete eight units in total to successfully complete the qualification. There are four mandatory units and candidates must choose an additional four units from a wide variety of available optional units to reflect their own work experience and organisational needs.

Mandatory Units

• Promote monitor and maintain health safety and security in the working environment

Assessment Process

Each unit is assessed through the observation and questioning of normal activities within the workplace and the development of a portfolio within which learners collect electronic, paper and witness statement evidence that they have covered the skills/knowledge required for the unit. Learners are also required to create reflective accounts of their work for inclusion in the portfolio and apply knowledge and understanding of their work practices to the principles contained within each unit.

Length of Programme

We support learners and set standards to enable participants to achieve targets and personal goals at an agreed pace. All learners are supported by a dedicated uke learning assessor who provides advice, guidance and support in the workplace throughout the duration of the programme.
