Level 3 qualification (A levels, National Diploma, Access to Higher Education Certificate, NVQ3 or equivalent). Mature students with relevant experience are welcome to apply. All interviewed applicants will require a CRB check and reference.

Is this course right for me?

This course aims to consolidate knowledge providing a qualification specific to your skills. It will provide you with a thorough grounding in transferable clinical skills and underpin these with current, relevant theory.

What will I be learning?

You will study a range of core and specialist modules developed in close partnership with the NHS and independent healthcare providers from local industry. In their first year, you will develop an awareness of the modern healthcare service and learn about the social, cultural, spiritual, legal, political and economic influences that impact the delivery of care. You will also be introduced to the human lifespan, both physical and psychological, gaining a basic understanding of the concepts of 'health' and 'ill' health. Students will also consider the 'patient journey' in depth and reflect on a range of patient experiences of health, illness and care. In the second year, you will complete modules covering the legal and ethical context of care and develop an understanding of evidence-based practice. You will complete a work-based project designed in collaboration with you workplace directly relevant to you role as part of a team in an existing service area.

How will I learn?

The innovative two year programme allows you to work, earn and learn using flexible modes of education including work based learning and e-learning. The foundation degree will develop relevant clinical skills and underpin them with the theoretical knowledge required by healthcare practitioners in a rapidly evolving service. You will be assessed by a combination of essays, reports, presentations and exams.

What else might I want to know?

In addition to spending two days per week in college you will be required to undertake two days per week work placement in order to meet the requirements of this course. You will be required to purchase a uniform to wear during work placement.

What can I do afterwards?

This course leads to a wide range of career opportunities in the public and private sectors of healthcare. Progression also leads on to the BSc (Hons) Health Studies at The University of Plymouth.
