"WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

Lessons from the past will help you understand current and future political developments whilst the study of politics will deepen your understanding of past events. A particular feature of the course is its focus on international politics and history.

If you choose this course you will benefit from:

lecturers from diverse backgrounds with expertise in the politics and history of Britain, France, Germany, the Middle East, Africa and the United States;
talks from guest speakers, which have recently included: a British MP, high commissioners from a number of African states and key speakers from major global corporations;
staff who are actively engaged in high quality research that informs their teaching;
the opportunity of an international experience with the option of an overseas field trip, study abroad, or overseas placement;
events and conferences featuring national and international politicians and dignitaries;
placement opportunities to apply for which in the past have included local historical organisations and one with an MP’s office, plus a wide choice of placements in the private and public sector;
activities and events set up by the History, International Relations, Politics and Sociology Society (HIPSOC), a society and Facebook site created and run by the students of the School of Humanities."

Course programme

"WHAT WILL I LEARN?

Your first year curriculum will set the foundation for the study of politics and history and offer you the opportunity of learning about key events from both a historical and political perspective. Topics include: The Rise of the Nation State in the Western World, From Empire to Welfare in Britain, Politics in Action and Introduction to Political Ideas.

The subjects that you will study in your second year examine a range of topics pertinent to both politics and history and will deepen and broaden your understanding of both disciplines. In addition, you will have the opportunity to specialise and select one optional module.

In your final year you will have the opportunity to choose from a range of specialised options and write a dissertation on a topic of your own choice.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

Your course will be based on a series of lectures, with associated seminars and workshop practical classes. In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: some modules will base assessment on 50% coursework and 50% examinations, others will be coursework only.

TEACHING CONTACT HOURS

In a typical week you will have up to 14 contact hours of teaching and this will break down as:

Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 1 hour of tutorial each week

Medium group teaching: 5 hours of workshops or seminars each week

Large group teaching: 8 hours of lectures each week

Personal study: 23 hours each week studying and revising in your own time
