You will take a core module, Doing History, which spans historical debates, archives and digital resources. It will expose you to the latest debates within the historical profession, while also providing training in historical skills, such as using archives and exploring history through ICT. This will help equip you for your dissertation, on your chosen research topic, on which you will work one-to-one with an assigned specialist supervisor. Module assignments can be tailored to fit your research interests. You will also choose two option modules from the following three: Twentieth-Century Britain: Politics, Society and Culture; International History; and The Eighteenth Century: Revolution, Empire and Society.

About this course

This programme gives you the chance to study a variety of historiographical approaches and research methods, and to apply them to your chosen research area.
It will provide you with the skills necessary for archival and digital research, as well as techniques for analysing a range of textual and graphic documents.
You will gain valuable written and oral communication skills to enable you to engage confidently with both academic and public audiences using a variety of different written, spoken, digital and visual presentational formats.
You will have access to research-active teaching staff, who are experts in their fields, ensuring your learning is supported by the latest research techniques and findings.
There is an emphasis on student-centred learning supported by regular workshop sessions, personal tuition and the latest interactive learning technologies.
You will have access to the resources and expertise of the Centre for the Historical Record, Kingston University's forum for debate and discussion of academic and public history.
We run a programme of talks and workshops delivered by eminent visiting history lecturers, and professionals from archives, museums, heritage and public history organisations.
There are opportunities to take work placements within research archives, institutes and museums in the London area, and to work on local heritage projects. The programme will provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary to gain employment in a broad range of academic, business, media and heritage organisations.
You will gain valuable workplace skills in: problem solving and organisation; data collation, review and synopsis; communication (oral, written and electronic); time management; computing; and co-operation and teamwork.

A good honours degree or equivalent in history, English or a related subject.
