History of Art with Italian (V3R3)

In your second year you will take two core modules: Venice, Rise and Myth: Art and Architecture in the Veneto (1100-1600) and Exhibiting the Contemporary, plus Modern Italian Language II with the Italian department and one long-view module in History of Art. Examples are: Art and Society in Renaissance Florence; Pilgrimage: Art, Culture and Travel in the Medieval World; Practical Art; Danish Art in the Nineteenth Century. You may also choose two short modules in History of Art such as The Spaces of Seventeenth-Century Dutch Painting; From Fortress to Country House; A Fine Tomorrow; Art in an Age of Revolution; Italian Baroque; Danish Art in the Nineteenth Century.

In your final year you may take take two core modules: History of the History of Art and an 8,000 word Dissertation. Optional modules from History of Art may include Globalisation and Contemporary Art; Deconstructing Medieval and Early-Modern Buildings; East meets West: the Visual Arts in Colonial and Post-colonial India; Mannerisms; Visual Art and Poetry and an optional modules from the Italian department such as Modern Italian Language.

How will I be taught?

Modules are taught either through weekly lectures combined with seminars, or through small-group seminars alone. The fundamental importance of the direct experience of works of art is emphasised at every stage of your degree. Seminars in galleries and museums, or site visits to key monuments and buildings, are integrated into modules. You can also study a studio-based Practical Art module in your second year.

You will have on average 10 hours of contact time (including lectures, seminars, field trips and tutorials) and around 27 hours of independent study per week. We provide written feedback on essays with the option of tutorials to discuss them further, and one-to-one tutorials during the preparation of your dissertation.

How will I be assessed?

We use a variety of assessment methods throughout your degree programme, including assessed essays, examinations, a research-based dissertation and (for the Practical Art and the exhibition-based modules) a portfolio of work responding to a specific practical task. The final two years of study contribute 50% each to your final degree classification.
