About this course
- place key events and developments in their chronological contexts- identify significant influences on the growth and development of London- recognise issues of architectural style and town planning- identify ways of taking your own interests forward with greater critical awareness.
No additional costs. Please bring pen and paper (or electronic equivalent).Books and resources will be recommended throughout the course.

- the political background: repression and reform; Whigs and Liberals, Tories and Conservatives
- the changing landscape: infrastructure and buildings for public purposes
- Londoners’ homes, the development of suburbs and the defence of open space
- social issues: health, crime, education
- leisure and pleasure
- Monarchy and Empire.
Classes will be taught through a mixture of illustrated lectures and discussion. Materials will include maps and
plans, drawings, formal and informal writings, using projected images and paper handouts.
