The MA in the History of Medicine aims to introduce you to the advanced study of the history of medicine, and to equip you with the conceptual and practical skills to carry out independent historical research in this field.
You are encouraged to engage with a range of concepts, and to place developments within medical theory and practice in a broad social and cultural framework.

All students are required to take one of the following optional modules:
- Themes & Approaches to the Historical Study of Religious Cultures
- Themes & Approaches to the Historical Study of Consumption
- Themes & Approaches to the Historical Study of Empire
- Themes & Approaches to the Historical Study of Gender & Sexuality
All course-specific core modules and optional modules will be delivered by weekly two-hour seminars, and the MA methdological core module by a variety of lectures, seminars and workshops.
Assessment:
All modules apart from the dissertation will be assessed solely by the submission of a 6,000 word essay. A 15,000 word dissertation is required (20,000 for MA in History of Medicine students), The dissertation project will be undertaken under the supervision of one of the Department’s faculty members.
