Overview
The PGCE Secondary History course at Liverpool Hope is progressive in nature, supporting the individual to reach their full potential in working towards becoming an outstanding trainee by the end of the course. A range of experiences are provided as part of the university element of the course including group discussion and reflection on the theory and literature on teaching History which trainees are then encouraged to exemplify through relation to their own school practice – observed and actual. The course also provides the opportunity to share good practice and consider a range of practical, creative teaching strategies which can then be employed in school. Areas covered include the school History curriculum at KS3, GCSE and ‘A’ level; assessment in History; differentiating the learning experience for pupils and how to approach the teaching of emotive issues. Through a close working partnership with our placement schools trainees are provided with a supportive, constructive learning environment.
All Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) courses at Liverpool Hope offer students the opportunity to combine a programme of theory with real world experience. The initial professional development focuses what underpins the work of an effective and successful teacher, while school placements offer you the opportunity to put theory into practice.
Initial Professional Development (IPD): This part of the programme covers general aspects of becoming a teacher. It is largely lecture-based supported by discussion-based seminars with an assigned professional tutor. IPD develops the student teacher's knowledge and understanding of a range of key issues in education.
