Described as ‘filthy and fun’, Hogarth was our first urban artist and political satirist. Using his paintings and prints we will explore the high and mainly low-life of Georgian London.

About this course

• Describe and analyse the composition of A Rake’s Progress• Explain the rise and decline of the gin trade• Identify red light districts of London as illustrated in Hogarth’s prints• Assess how far Hogarth’s work reflects the realities of life in Georgian London.

You do not need to purchase materials other than those for note-taking. The Sir John Soame Museum is less than 10 minutes’ walk from City Lit. The National Gallery is also within walking distance. Entrance to both is free..

Course programme

Each week we will examine paintings or engravings that illustrate an aspect of urban life and set them in context. Topics will include: the gin craze; prostitution; health, marriage, employment, religion and theatre-going.


Each week there will be an informative talk during which class discussion will be encouraged. We shall use small group work to analyse original sources and a range of handouts will be available to aid discussion. There will be a visit to the Sir John Soame Museum or the National Gallery (depending on availability). You are encouraged to bring along/describe items you have read in newspapers/heard on radio/seen on TV you think may be of interest to the group.

If you wish to develop your appreciation of London history you might consider enrolling on the cycle of London courses beginning in the Autumn with Roman London.
