Riding instructors teach people of all ages and skill levels to ride horses. They can feed the horses daily, have them trained and groomed, or check that these jobs are done by grooms or apprentices. Instructors can also perform administrative duties. Riding instructors give lessons to children and adults, both individually and in groups. They teach people of varying degrees of skill, from beginners to competition riders. Some teach people with physical disabilities or learning difficulties. They do a careful evaluation of each student's abilities and skills, to make sure that each one is able to mount and ride safely. For each lesson, they must establish a plan and stick to it so that learners can progress at their own pace and feel satisfied with the progress; in addition, they must write reports on the progress of each pupil. In addition to teaching, some instructors are tasked with training young horses to respond to the rider's commands. They can also lecture assistants and trainees on topics such as nutrition, first aid and horse grooming. The trainers check that the horses are given regular meals, drink and exercise, are in good health and in good condition.
