Course programme

Course Overview
This programme is developed to meet the needs of individuals who wish to work in the horticulture industry, or gain practical experience and work towards a recognised qualification.

Course Structure
The programme consists of a series of units delivered over 1 year. Each unit has a credit value, the total of credits achieved determines whether an award, certificate or diploma is obtained. Students attend College as full time students on at least two days a week and practical work placements on other days. Work experience takes place on campus in the gardens, or at an appropriate off campus site.

City & Guilds/NPTC entry certificate in skills for working life - land based (Land & Plants)

Assessments/Examinations
Students will be observed and assessed on practical work undertaken through work experience & at college to ensure they are competent. Students gain evidence for their portfolios from a variety of sources. Students will also be expected to undertake qualifications in literacy, numeracy, ICT, first aid and personal development, these will be assessed through portfolios & or formal examinations.

Cost / Equipment
Tuition is free under 18 years of age but there are additional costs:
  • £40 Materials (per annum)
  • £102.50 Certificate/Registration (Registration and Certification is free for students under the age of 18)
All students are expected to obtain protective footwear and suitable outdoor clothing for practical work. It is an essential Health & Safety requirement that Tetanus inoculation is up to date. It is recommended that students refer to their GPs to determine whether or not Hepatitis B is require. Students will also be expected to provide stationery for all lessons.
