Course programme

What you need to know
How will I study?

Your year at college consists of a full study program and not just a vocational qualification to give you the best opportunities for progression either within education or the industry. You will be studying a variety of units for your BTEC qualification, including the following core units: Unit 1 Introducing the Hospitality Industry, Unit 2 Working in the Hospitality Industry, Unit 3 Food Safety and Health and Safety in Hospitality, Unit 9 How the Hospitality Industry Contributes to Healthy Lifestyles, Unit 14 Teamwork in Hospitality, Unit 18 Delivering the Hospitality Customer Experience. In the first week of term you will complete a level 2 award in Food Safety in Catering. If you have not already achieved a Math and English GCSE at grade C or above you will also study these subjects further so you can improve your grade. In addition to this we have a work experience program including trips, conferences and work placements.
How will I be taught?

Your theory will be taught in the classroom. Practical lessons and assessments will take place in our large, state of the art kitchens and restaurants. You will follow a weekly timetable and will also have the opportunity to volunteer to become involved extra functions and events. Because of the nature of the industry and our reflection of it, you may sometimes have early morning or evening practical classes. This may on rare occasions also include weekends.
How will I be assessed?

There is a written assignment for most of your units. Some of your units will also have a practical component where you will be observed. You will also have two formal exams. Please note that any resits will incur a charge. All units are marked at pass merit of distinction.
