What will I learn?
The Core syllabus is required for both Standard and Higher level. This includes the structure of the atom and the way in which atoms combine to form molecules and giant lattices, the periodicity of the chemical elements, acid-base and redox chemistry, energy changes, equilibrium, rates of reaction and an introduction to the chemistry of carbon compounds. All students study two optional topics and complete a portfolio of practical work. Higher Level students will also study most of the concepts in more depth.
How will I learn?
Much of the learning will involve work in pairs and small teams in practical investigations, in research exercises and in presenting information to other members of the group. Class teaching and individual student activity will also play an important part in the learning experience.
What will it cost?
The College will provide standard textbook and/or relevant materials. All students will be expected to provide their own stationery, computer disks and calculators. Optional further costs:
- £12 for magazine
- £20 for trips
- £10 for photocopying
An International Baccalaureate qualification in Chemistry is rated highly by all Universities -including Oxbridge and the Medical Schools. A good grade will help you to secure a place to study almost any subject at any University, either in the UK or abroad. Chemistry is an essential qualification for progression into careers such as Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Veterinary Science and for some Biology courses. It is considered desirable in some other Higher Education courses.
How will I be assessed?
External assessment takes place at the end of the two-year course. There are three written papers including a Multiple Choice test -which account for 76% of the total marks. Coursework, which accounts for 24% of the marks, is assessed by your lecturer and moderated externally.
