Why study English (World Literature)?
The IB English course offers an exciting alternative to AS/A levels. It reflects the international nature of the IB, covering a wide range of English and World Literature and providing you with depth of study and international breadth and perspective.
What will I learn?
You will study a variety of novels, plays and poems, loosely grouped together under four themes: War Literature; Power and Relationships; the Individual in Society and Personal Crisis. Our study of literature will help to enhance your oral and written communication skills, and will develop your appreciation of a wide range of literary works. In particular, the course aims to extend your knowledge and enjoyment of international literature. You will study a total of 15 texts at Higher Level, and 11 at Standard Level.
How will I learn?
You will encounter a stimulating variety of teaching methods. Class discussion is an integral part of the course, and you will be encouraged to express your views and to respond to the views of others. Group work, presentations, exploration and creative tasks will also feature.
What will I be able to do next?
The International Baccalaureate is a prestigious qualification, recognised and highly valued by universities and employers.
How will I be assessed?
50% of the assessment is based on 2 external examinations. The first of these is the Commentary paper, which involves the analysis of literary extracts. The second is the essay paper, where you write an essay in response to a choice of genre-based questions (Drama). A further 20% of the assessment is based on world literature coursework assignments. The final 30% is a two-part oral component, comprising an oral presentation and an oral commentary, worth 15% each.
Course costs
Approximately £100.00 for purchase of new texts, but £25.00 per year if the second hand service is used and/or books borrowed from our well-stocked college library.
