About this course

For entry to the IB programme you must achieve an average of at least 5.5 points in your GCSEs, based on A* = 8pts, A = 7 pts …G = 1 point. In addition you must achieve Cs in English Language, English Literature, a Modern Foreign Language, Mathematics and Science. Why study Environmental Systems and Societies?
Firstly, concern about the Environment is growing on an almost daily basis and studying it will help you to understand what the concern is all about. For example, are we really on a one way trip to global burnout or is it more complex? Secondly, Environmental Systems draws in a wide range of scientific topics and it is particularly valuable if you want a broader science in your mix of subjects.

What will I learn?
In Environmental Systems and Societies you will learn about ecosystems, the atmosphere, the hydrosphere (water) and human population. In this subject the links between these are important; you will be taking a â€OEsystems approach†to the world to see how the different parts work together as a whole.

International Baccalaureate Environmental Systems is a- OEGroup 4-Subject, one of the experimental sciences. It is available at Standard Level, but not at Higher Level, at the moment.

How will I learn?
The subject lends itself to a wide range of styles of learning. There will be research work, discussions, traditional lessons and significant amounts of field and laboratory work. You will be expected to take an interest in the Environment and to keep up to date with the news.

How will I be assessed?
The course is assessed through final examination, contributing 76% of the marks, and practical work and a project, contributing the other 24%.

Course costs
Essential: You will be expected to purchase a textbook and to pay for some fieldwork.

Your laboratory work might involve some costs, depending on the work you do. The estimated cost is £30, excluding optional fieldwork.
