Course programme
This event will cover the main aspects of the zEnterpise infrastructure. The concepts of an ensemble will be presented with emphasis on the different types of virtualization that are deployed. Detailed information on the hypervisors that are managed by the Unified Resource Manager will also be provided. The topics will include: zEnterprise ensemble Virtualization PowerVM PR/SM (LPAR) z/VM KVM. A structured planning and design approach that can aid in implementing a zEnterprise ensemble will be covered. We will describe a working environment, identify the components, and summarize a method for collecting information necessary for creating a high-level design that supports the deployment of a workload in a zEnterprise ensemble. This includes: Planning and design process Gathering requirements Physical and logical inventory Existing environment Existing workload Reconciling and optimizing Designing the solution Transposing the existing and target environments Target environment Target workload All the steps necessary to properly build an ensemble will be shown. We will discuss how to use the Unified Resource Manager functions within the HMC, how to create virtual servers, how to assign storage resources to hypervisors and virtual servers, how to create virtual networks, and so on. For, example: Building an ensemble environment (Existing -> Target) zManager pre-reqs zEnterprise - provisioning Using the Ensemble HMC Creating the ensemble Virtual Servers Storage Resources Virtual Networks Workload Policies Once the ensemble is created, and the workload is deployed, we will show how to manage and monitor it. We will cover the reports that can be collected, how to use them in problem analysis, and performance and energy management. The concept of a workload is discussed and the tools available to control it, such as: Managing the Environment Operations Monitoring Reports Workload Service Class Virtual Server Hypervisors Problem Analysis Energy Management Power Saving and capping.
