BTEC Subsidiary Diploma is designed to provide a specialist work-related alternative to an A Level.
You will study the following units on this course:
Core Units:
Communication and Employability Skills for ICT
Understand the attributes of employees that are valued by employers.
Computer Systems
Understand the hardware and software components of computer systems.
Optional Units:
An additional four units are taught from a selection of the following:
Database Design
Understand the purpose and features of relational databases.
Be able to create, populate and test multiple databases.
Spreadsheet Modelling
Understand how spreadsheets can be used to solve complex problems.
Systems Analysis and Design
Understand the principles of systems analysis and design.
Client Side Customisation of Web Pages
Understand the fundamentals of CSS and a chosen scripting language.
Organisational Systems Security
Know potential threats to ICT systems and organizations.
Software Design and Development
Know the nature and features of programming languages.
Website Production
Students will need to be able to design and create an interactive website.
E-commerce
Know the technologies involved in e-commerce, understand the impact of e-commerce on organisations and on society, and be able to plan an e-commerce strategy.
Teaching styles
This course is taught using lectures, demonstrations, practical work, group activity and individual study. Teachers are not only well qualified and experienced but also provide students with a high level of professional support.
Key features
This is a very practical course with ample opportunities for hands-on experience. There are possible external visits to see ICT in practice and regular workshop support available.
Assessment
The focus is predominantly work-related and coursework based. The Subsidiary Diploma is graded: Pass, Merit, and Distinction. Students can obtain a Distinction* grade overall.
Resources and Facilities
Students will study in well-equipped classrooms. Each student will have access to a PC – all of which are high specification and are loaded with appropriate up-to-date software.
Provisional entry requirements
A minimum of five grade Cs at GCSE (or 4 – 9 grades)or equivalent including English Language and minimum of grade D or 3 in GCSE maths.
Previous ICT skills are advantageous but not a prerequisite
