ILEX - Certificate in Law and Practice
ILEX is aimed at those people wishing to pursue a career in the law; this may include school leavers, graduates, legal support staff, mature students looking for a career change and those returning to work after having a family.

What does the course involve?
This is a professional course which can lead to you becoming a fully qualified Legal Executive. Legal Executives are now recognised as a branch of the legal profession in their own right. Once fully qualified, a Fellow of the Institute can be appointed head of a department staffed by other lawyers. By first qualifying as a Member or Fellow of ILEX, those who have the ability and dedication may continue the ILEX training route to qualify as a solicitor.

What will I study?
The Law Modules: The ILEX Level 3 Certificate in Law and Practice.

Year 1 English Legal System, Legal Research, Client Care Skills, Law of Tort, Civil Litigation.

What are the entry requirements for ILEX - Certificate in Law and Practice?

• There are no entry requirements.
• You do not need to have studied this subject before.
• Some previous experience is desirable.

How is the course assessed?

• Examination at the end of each unit/module
• Coursework

How much additional study is required?
Students are expected to dedicate at least five hours per week additional study on a weekly basis in addition to the completion of work set by tutors.

How long does it take to become fully qualified?
Typically, a student takes two years to complete the level 3 qualification. To achieve level 6 a further 4 units must be studied; these can be completed in one year, although most students will take two units per year. A total of 5 years qualifying employment is required before Fellowship of the Institute can be achieved; this qualifying period can start at any point during study. If a Fellow wishes to qualify as a solicitor, then only the Legal Practice Course needs to be completed.

Do I have to be working in a legal office?
The course is aimed at those either working in the legal environment or those who wish to do so, therefore it is advantageous to be employed in this area. It is not, however, a requirement of qualification until level 6.

Is this course suitable for someone who has just finished GCSEs?
This course is not really suitable for 16 year olds, unless they are already employed in a legal environment.
