This vital course is about your rights when shooting in a public place, particularly when photographing buildings. It will cover photography of private and public buildings from a public space, permits, and how to deal with security guards or police questions. The course also looks at copyright of images, why you should protect them and how to do so.

About this course

- understand photographers’ rights regarding photography in a public place
- identify when a filming permit is required
- describe how to react when confronted buy security guards who claim that photographing the building is not permitted
- describe your rights to a police officer
- understand difference between image usage and copyright
- assign copyright information to your images.

The two-session course will be lecture-based with hand-outs and an audio-visual presentation. The tutor, Grant Smith, has considerable first-hand experience of the misuse of Section 44 of the Terrorism Act to restrict photography. He is one of the organisers of ‘I’m a Photographer, Not a Terrorist’, and has campaigned for the suspension of Section 44.
