On this project-based eight-week course you will design and make your own decorative glass artwork. You will be free to explore the process of fusing compatible glasses together to create panels of glass to your own design. The panels can then be shaped through a process known as ‘slumping’ to create dishes and free-standing panels.

Learners who wish to explore the process of fusing compatible glasses together to create panels of glass to your own design.
Some previous experience is desirable. You will be using hand tools to cut glass and assemble glass and this will require average dexterity.

How will I learn?
There will be the opportunity to develop your glass making skills and explore new techniques. Along with practical work there will be tutor presentations of inspiring work by contemporary artists and the techniques used to create them.
All work will be taken to a glass studio in the Ouseburn Valley to be fired in a kiln. There will be the opportunity, should the group wish, for one of the eight sessions to take place in the Ouseburn glass studio at an extra charge (see below). This is optional and will be discussed and decided by the group.
How will my progress be monitored and assessed?
You will be continually monitored and assessed by your tutor.
Progression opportunities
You can progress onto art and craft courses in a choice of subjects. Your tutor will be able to give you advice and guidance.
What equipment or materials will I need to provide?
Glass – This depends upon your choice of project and the particular materials you choose to use. Average costs £20
Kiln Firing – This is calculated on the area of kiln taken up by your glass work:
A4 sized area £6.50
A3 sized area £10
Ouseburn Glass Studio hire - for a 2 hour session (optional) the charge is £60 and this would be shared between the group (Usual group size 10-12).
What other support is available?
Help with numeracy or literacy is available. ICT drop-in sessions are available during term time and are open to all learners. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Learner Support Funding is available for equipment, childcare and travel to learners who qualify. How to cut glass and grind the edges
Assembling glass pieces to create your design
Copper foil techniques (subject to confirmation)
Individuals are encouraged to work on projects of their choice.
