The course covers observational study of plants and flowers using both soft pastels and oil pastels. You will explore the techniques of working with pastels and specialist papers, whilst developing observational drawing skills.
You will be shown art historical examples of artists work in this medium and in this genre.

Using the techniques, you will make smaller studies and compositions leading to a larger more developed work.

About this course

• Compare the different qualities of soft and oil pastels.
• Work from observation of plants and flowers using both oil and soft pastels
• Explore the possibilities of combining both types of pastel in the same image
• Mix colours with the pastels
• Gain awareness of different pastel papers and mediums.
• Recognise the work of a range of artists using this medium and genre.

All basic materials for the course will be provided. You may wish to purchase your own set of pastels, your tutor will be able to advise you.

Course programme

We will cover mark making techniques and colour mixing in both oil and soft pastels. You will make several smaller studies that will inform a larger piece. The course also covers how the pastels are made and you will be introduced to a range of specialist papers.

You will be taught by demonstration, discussion and practical application. You will be shown a range of examples of artists work in pastels.
