Overview
Our Integrated Industrial Design MSc programme aims to further develop critical awareness of major industrial design practice, increasing input capability and value to employers and is designed to improve the effectiveness of Industrial Designers.
Industrial Design (ID) is"the professional service of creating products and systems that optimize function, value and appearance for the mutual benefit of user and manufacturer” (IDSA) and is considered and integrated with an enterprise, business and sustainability agenda. The 180 credit programme culminates in a 60 credit Integrated Industrial Design Major Project that provides an opportunity to bring together all of the elements appropriate to the project Design problem or opportunity.
The entire design process is covered, starting from a design problem or opportunity and ending with a complete product that is fit for mass or batch production.
You will develop skills in producing a balanced portfolio of high quality designs and innovative thinking which will enable you to deal with complex and interrelated issues both analytically and creatively.
Areas covered include: sketching, visual layouts, presentation techniques, qualitative and quantitative design research methods, Enterprise & Business, Design for Behaviour Change, Collaborative Design, creating product design briefs, project management, advanced CAD application and design practice culminating in a 60 credit Integrated Industrial Design Major Project that provides an opportunity to implement all of the appropriate elements.
The Integrated Industrial Design MSc programme also provides you with the exciting opportunity to enter an international design competition as well as participation in industry supported projects.
The School is based within a purpose built £21 million building, which opened in 2011. The design of the building has collaborative working at its heart, providing an inspirational environment for all those who work in it.

Industrial Design & Technology Skills (15 credits)

Industrial Design & Technology Skills (15 credits)

This module aims to increase knowledge of and competence with a range of visual communication methods used by industrial designers. To develop knowledge of technologies associated with product design and the integration of such technology in the Product Design process. To explore emerging technologies and consider possible impact on future designs.

Design Research Methods (15 credits)

Design Research Methods (15 credits)

This module will expose students to a variety of research methods, which they can employ within their own future professional practice. The module covers: quantitative and qualitative methodology, research methodology (structuring an enquiry, generating research questions, selecting methods), secondary and primary data collection methods (surveys, interviewing, ethnography, creative methods and diary studies) data analysis and converting insights into design opportunities.

Design for Behaviour Change (15 credits)

Design for Behaviour Change (15 credits)

Design is a significant driver of behaviour change, enabling, encouraging or discouraging certain activities from taking place. Borrowing from socio-psychology models of behaviour change, designers have directed their attention towards enabling recycling, increasing exercise and reducing sedentary behaviours, amongst other examples. Design for Behaviour Change is now a recognised discipline within design practice with its own strategies, tools and processes, as well as a host of case study projects. Through completion of a design challenge, this module seeks to introduce students to this emergent area and better equip them to ethically influence user behaviour towards prescribed outcomes.

Business, Enterprise and Design (30 credits)

Business, Enterprise and Design (30 credits)

The aims of this module are for the student: to implement and exploit design capabilities and skills in typical product design briefs; to improve skills in project management; to have the opportunity to enter an international student design competition; to integrate creative strategies and technological knowledge in resolving typical product design briefs. Additionally, students will be introduced to principles of business and enterprise in a design context to enable them to critically discuss and reflect on conflicts between environmental, social and economic business issues.

Please note: this module runs across semester one and two.

Advanced 3D CAD/E (30 credits)

New practises and digital technologies are constantly being developed and integrated into the design industry in order to generate and capitalise on potential new markets. The aim of this module is to introduce and expose design students to such new design practises and directly engage them with digital technologies that have been developed to aid, consolidate and support the product design process.

Digital Fabrication Skills (15 Credits)

The aims of this module are for you to: manage effectively a programme of industrial design involving concept generation, Computer Aided Design (CAD) driven design development and product presentation.

You will also focus on the development of CAD/Computer Aided Manufacture (CAM)-driven and manual modelling techniques. Effective time management will be supported and developed.

Integrated Industrial Design Major Project (60 credits)

The aims of this module are for the student to: integrate and apply knowledge, skills and values from other modules, to identify a design problem/opportunity to research in the most appropriate way for the chosen problem area. You will then arrive at a feasible, agreed project brief and develop this into a detailed product design specification. You will then conceive, design and develop an appropriate product or components that meet the specification, test, evaluate iterate toward a final product proposal designed for manufacture and a business/market context described.
