Our Intensive English Language Course is designed for international applicants who have met the academic requirements for a UK university course, but need evidence of the necessary level of English to succeed.

In order to help you achieve the required level of English, we provide small group tuition and teaching approaches that are reflective of what is expected in a higher education environment in the UK, with varied assessment methods to assess language and academic skills development.

You can apply for entry onto our Intensive English Language Course in September or February. The course is offered at three levels over either one, two or three semesters, depending on your English language entry score.

University College Birmingham will accept the Intensive English Language Course certificate as proof of your level of English. If you wish to study elsewhere after this course, it is recommended that you check whether your chosen institution will accept this certificate.

About this course

This course is intended to help you improve your academic English skills in preparation for studying on a UK university course – it is not intended for people who simply wish to improve their general English Language skills.

Course programme

Teaching and assessment

Teaching

Each 13-week semester course involves:

  • 12 weeks of teaching, with assessments in week 13
  • 16 hours of taught sessions each week
  • A two-hour academic success workshop each week to monitor progress and provide further support
  • A one-hour pastoral tutorial

It is important that you demonstrate a commitment to your studies with high levels of attendance in order to achieve the required results to progress.

Assessment

At the end of the course, you will be assessed in the following skills areas:

  • Academic reading
  • Academic listening
  • Academic writing (assessed through a portfolio of writing tasks throughout the course)
  • Academic speaking (assessed through a portfolio of speaking tasks throughout the course)
