Talk: Hampstead attracted artists in the 1920s and 30s for much the same reason it had a hundred years earlier, but whereas the Romantic idealism of the 19th century was driven by its reaction to the horror of the Industrial Revolution, the creative spirit of the 1930s was moved to build a better world after WW1. Walk: In Hampstead we can find places where the architects - the idealists of the Bauhaus who were serious about their Brave New World - and writers - Orwell, Huxley and Wells more pessimistically seeing the machine to be the devil incarnate - lived and worked.
