Course Summary:
This course provides a foundation of knowledge, skills and work experience to help you gain employment within the equine industry or to progress to the next level of study. There is a non-riding option for those people who do not ride.
Entry requirements
You will need a reasonable standard of educational attainment, to include two GCSE passes in academic subjects at grade D or above. Equivalent qualifications may be accepted - this can be discussed at your interview.
To ensure the welfare of our horses, we operate a personal weight restriction of no more than 13 stone for those people taking the riding option. There is, however, the possibility of a non-riding option which can be explored at interview.
You must have a minimum of a Merit grade to progress to an Advanced Diploma.

Course Content: You will study the following units: Undertake work-related experience in the land-based industries Carry out and understand the principles of feeding and watering horses Undertake routine stable duties Undertake horse handling Fit and maintain horse tack and clothing Introduction to riding horses on the flat Understand the principles of horse biology In addition to these units, you will study Functional Skills. How will I be assessed? The course is continuously assessed using a range of methods including written tests, projects and practicals. All coursework will be compiled to build a portfolio. Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required? Correctly fitted hats, gloves and riding footwear - all up to current safety standards - are essential. Body protectors are advisable. You also need writing materials. What can I do after this course? You can progress to an Advanced Diploma or Certificate, to an apprenticeship or into employment. However, you must have a minimum of a Merit grade to progress to an Advanced Diploma.
