You will need: In addition to general Academy requirements you will normally need Double Science at GCSE and enthusiasm for the subject. because: you will need to perform simple calculations you will need to have good comprehension skills and be able to write fluently in the examination and in assessed work.

The main focus is to heighten students' awareness of the basic principles of Chemistry via a wide variety of teaching methods. These methods will provide opportunities for the students to carry out an extensive range of practical investigations, to develop their ability to think creatively about their observations and to apply their laboratory based understanding of scientific principles to unfamiliar situations. Environmental issues represent an ideal opportunity to put Chemistry into its international and global context.
What does the course consist of?
The course runs over two years. Both Standard and Higher Level students will study a core of material covering:
- Stoichiometry Chemistry
- Atomic Structure
- Periodicity
- Bonding
- Energetics
- Kinetics
- Equilibrium
- Acids and Bases
- Oxidation and Reduction
- Organic Chemistry
- Measurement and Data Processing
Higher Level students will study all of the above in greater detail.
Both Standard and Higher Level students will study two units.
- Medicine and Drugs
- Human Biochemistry
Assessment
The subject is assessed via both external written papers (76%) and internal assessment of practical work (24%).
Although only approximately a quarter of the final mark is assessed internally, it is planned to spend at least 40% of the Chemistry programme time carrying out practical work.
What else do I need to know?
You will be taught in modern well-equipped laboratories. Specialist textbooks will be available for each student. CD-ROMS, video viewing facilities, texts and journals are available in the college library. Computer packages for Chemistry are available on the college network. Lessons will include practical investigations, lectures and note-taking, discussions, topic tests and practising past exam papers. You will be encouraged to attend conferences that will support your university application.
