This course runs in 2016/17.

This degree is designed to develop your skills to enable you to hold decision-making career positions in a rapidly changing world. You will relate your economics knowledge to understand and evaluate global economic trends and policy issues.

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

With a firm grounding in economics developed in the first year, the course allows you to specialise in international economic issues such as international trade patterns and policy, globalisation and its impacts.

This course encourages you to become a ‘global thinker’. You will focus on transnational interactions of firms and individuals through market exchanges and trade. You will also consider the impact of globalising processes due to developments in the communications media, technological and environmental changes, and the search for a new economic order.

You should be well prepared for possible employment in national and international organisations, including non- profit and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), in business and government.

If you choose this course you will benefit from:

  • the option to apply for a work placement in the UK or internationally. Some placements are salaried, the amount varies from company to company, but is currently in the range of £15,000 to £20,000 per year;
  • experienced teaching staff who bring professional or research expertise to their teaching;
  • links to HM Treasury with opportunities for mentoring and placements;
  • Interactive learning approaches; you will take part in economic experiments including a trading pit game, international trading game and the chance to run your own production line;
  • the opportunity to apply for summer studentships which may include the Government Economic Service (GES), PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Barclays and the Bank of England, amongst others;
  • studying at Coventry Business School, who are currently a member of European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) and the Association of Business Schools (ABS).

Memberships

European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD)

Memberships shall be renewed in accordance with the relevant bodies’ standard review process and subject to the University maintaining the same high standards of course delivery.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

In the first year, you will study subjects including Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Mathematical Techniques for Economics, Data Analysis Skills for Economics, Current Issues in Applied Economics, and Developing Academic and Professional Skills 1.

Discussions on international issues are strongly embedded in the economics curriculum throughout each of the three years of study. Specialist topics include World Business and Trade, International Economics, Development Economics and Economic Policy in the European Union.

These will introduce you to contemporary issues such as policy co-ordination in euro-zone countries, causes of the global financial crisis and global imbalances, causes of rising food prices, deadlock in the Doha trade talks, progress on Millennium Development Goals, and impacts of the rise of China and India on European living standards.

You also have the choice to take an optional placement or study abroad year after completing your first two years.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

Your course will be based on a series of lectures, with associated seminars, and workshops and practical classes. In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.

If you are interested in part-time study (which is taught during the day) please contact the Part-time Admissions team on +44 (0) 24 7765 4321 or email part-time.uni@coventry.ac.uk for further information, but please note that not all courses have a part-time option.
