  • This course has been of awesome use for me. Since I moved on from Law School I have been very lost in regards to which element I would work with. With the course, I got to be distinctly inspired by enhancing my English aptitudes and I have been thinking about working with human rights law, however I am not certain how this really functions, but rather I will be looking at it. I might want to thank prof. Olivier De Schutter, for the time spent on this course, for the UCL and edX for giving individuals the chance to find out about such an imperative matter as human rights.

What I would highlight: Fabulous course. This was my first MOOC and it couldn't have been a superior affair for me. Before the finish of the course I was doing much, much better in the exams and was finding the readings significantly simpler. The course makes a considerable measure of progress, however is extremely nicely organized and the experiences gave by Dr Schutter, the other staff individuals, the activities and the course materials is important. Truly prescribed.
What could be improved: No negative aspects.

Course programme

Human rights develop through the constant dialogue between international human rights bodies and domestic courts, in a search that crosses geographical, cultural and legal boundaries. The result is a unique human rights grammar, which this course shall discuss and question, examining the sources of human rights, the rights of individuals and the duties of States, and the mechanisms of protection. We shall rely extensively on comparative material from different jurisdictions, to study a wide range of topics including, for instance, religious freedom in multicultural societies, human rights in employment relationships, economic and social rights in development, or human rights in the context of the fight against terrorism.

Teacher:Olivier De Schutter Olivier De Schutter is a Professor at the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL) in Belgium and at SciencesPo (Paris), and a Member of the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights since 2015. He was between 2008 and 2014 the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to food (www.srfood.org). A Visiting Professor in various institutions including, in 2010-2013, at Columbia University, he chaired the EU Network of Independent Experts on Fundamental Rights in 2002-2006, and was in 2004-2008 the General Secretary of the International Federation of Human Rights (FIDH) on the issue of globalization and human rights. His publications are in the area of international human rights and fundamental rights in the EU, with a particular emphasis on economic and social rights and on the relationship between human rights and governance.
